Rose - Wikipedia. A rose is a woody perennialflowering plant of the genus. Rosa, in the family Rosaceae, or the flower it bears. There are over a hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. In most species they are 5 to 1. Most roses are deciduous but a few (particularly from South east Asia) are evergreen or nearly so. Each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red. Beneath the petals are five sepals (or in the case of some Rosa sericea, four). These may be long enough to be visible when viewed from above and appear as green points alternating with the rounded petals. There are multiple superior ovaries that develop into achenes. Many of the domestic cultivars do not produce hips, as the flowers are so tightly petalled that they do not provide access for pollination. The hips of most species are red, but a few (e. Rosa pimpinellifolia) have dark purple to black hips. Each hip comprises an outer fleshy layer, the hypanthium, which contains 5–1. Rose hips of some species, especially the dog rose (Rosa canina) and rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa), are very rich in vitamin C, among the richest sources of any plant. The hips are eaten by fruit- eating birds such as thrushes and waxwings, which then disperse the seeds in their droppings. Some birds, particularly finches, also eat the seeds. Citrus or Pyracantha, are modified stems, which always originate at a node and which have nodes and internodes along the length of the thorn itself.) Rose prickles are typically sickle- shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it. Some species such as Rosa rugosa and Rosa pimpinellifolia have densely packed straight prickles, probably an adaptation to reduce browsing by animals, but also possibly an adaptation to trap wind- blown sand and so reduce erosion and protect their roots (both of these species grow naturally on coastalsand dunes). Despite the presence of prickles, roses are frequently browsed by deer. A few species of roses have only vestigial prickles that have no points. Species. The genus Rosa is subdivided into four subgenera: Hulthemia (formerly Simplicifoliae, meaning . This subgenus is subdivided into 1. Cinnamomeae) – white, pink, lilac, mulberry and red roses from everywhere but North Africa. Synstylae – white, pink, and crimson flowered roses from all areas. They have been also used for commercial perfumery and commercial cut flower crops. Some are used as landscape plants, for hedging and for other utilitarian purposes such as game cover and slope stabilization. ![]() They also have minor medicinal uses. Ornamental plants. The majority of ornamental roses are hybrids that were bred for their flowers. A few, mostly species roses are grown for attractive or scented foliage (such as Rosa glauca and Rosa rubiginosa), ornamental thorns (such as Rosa sericea) or for their showy fruit (such as Rosa moyesii). Ornamental roses have been cultivated for millennia, with the earliest known cultivation known to date from at least 5. BC in Mediterranean countries, Persia, and China. Most are double- flowered with many or all of the stamens having mutated into additional petals. In the early 1. 9th century the Empress Josephine of France patronized the development of rose breeding at her gardens at Malmaison. As long ago as 1. Loddiges nursery for Abney Park Cemetery, an early Victorian garden cemetery and arboretum in England. Cut flowers. Roses are a popular crop for both domestic and commercial cut flowers. Crown of thorns likes it hot, dry and sunny - making it a perfect plant for spots where nothing else wants to grow. One of South Florida's most drought-tolerant. Pontellier could not help wondering if there were not a little imagination responsible for its origin, for the rose tint had never faded from her friend's face. Generally they are harvested and cut when in bud, and held in refrigerated conditions until ready for display at their point of sale. In temperate climates, cut roses are often grown in glasshouses, and in warmer countries they may also be grown under cover in order to ensure that the flowers are not damaged by weather and that pest and disease control can be carried out effectively. Significant quantities are grown in some tropical countries, and these are shipped by air to markets across the world. An associated product is rose water which is used for cooking, cosmetics, medicine and religious practices. The production technique originated in Persia and then spread through Arabia and India, and more recently into eastern Europe. They are also pressed and filtered to make rose hip syrup. Rose hips are also used to produce rose hip seed oil, which is used in skin products and some makeup products. In the Indian subcontinent, Rooh Afza, a concentrated squash made with roses, is popular, as are rose- flavoured frozen desserts such as ice cream and kulfi. The fruits of many species have significant levels of vitamins and have been used as a food supplement. Many roses have been used in herbal and folk medicines. Rosa chinensis has long been used in Chinese traditional medicine. This and other species have been used for stomach problems, and are being investigated for controlling cancer growth. Wild roses are host plants for a number of pests and diseases. Many of these are also shared with other plants, including especially other genera of the Rosaceae. Cultivated roses are often subject to severe damage from insect, arachnid and fungal pests and diseases. In many cases they cannot be usefully grown without regular treatment to control these problems. See also. References^. The plant book: A portable dictionary of the vascular plants. He went to a tavern, where, drunk once more, he caught the eye of a seemingly affluent woman. After being kicked out of the bar for fighting, he followed the woman—the vampire, Darla—into an alleyway, where she promised to show him a whole new world, and then sired him. During Angelus' first meeting with Darla's sire, The Master, he openly mocked the older vampire, and showed no fear despite the Master's greater age, power and authority. Afterward, he confronted Darla about her decision to remain underground; won over by Angelus' fearlessness, Darla chose to leave with Angelus, and temporarily abandoned her sire and Master. He managed to kill almost four- hundred other vampires in the process. Darla fled to Vienna, knocking out and abandoning Angelus in a burning barn and riding off on their only horse. After meeting again in Vienna and eating a troubadour in Madrid, Angelus and Darla became acquainted with the vampires James and Elisabeth. With the assistance of Monsignor Rivalli, Holtz tortured Angelus while trying to figure out how to get Angelus to help him to capture Darla. Angelus made an attempt to threaten him with mention of the Slayer, but Spike, who had never heard of the Slayer before, became instantly intrigued, and went on to develop an long- lasting obsession with the idea of killing a Slayer. He would eventually murder two Slayers, and became a particularly renowned vampire as a result. Despite being soulless, he was moved to tears during the performance. The two male vampires were restrained while The Immortal had a threesome with Darla and Drusilla, something that, incidentally, the female vampires never allowed Angelus and/or Spike to do. After the submarine suffered damage from a depth charge, Angel was forced to sire a mortally wounded Ensign Sam Lawson, as he was the only person who was able to repair the damage, and while Angel didn't care about the mission, he needed it to succeed to get the US government to leave him alone, and he needed the submarine so he would not get trapped on the ocean floor. After these events, Angel went underground until the war was over. During this time, Angel attempted to stay to himself, avoiding interaction with other residents and patrons. Despite the numerous strange incidents, murders and suicides running rampant throughout the hotel (caused by a demon), he looked the other way when his help would have made a difference. After finding a young woman named Judy Kovacs hiding in his room, Angel tried to preserve his isolation, first by disarming and removing the man chasing her, then by ejecting Judy. Fort Industry, which would later be renamed Storer Broadcasting, also owned WJBK radio (1. AM, now WLQV, and 9. FM, now WDRQ). The station originally operated from Detroit's Masonic Temple until 1. Second Avenue in Detroit's New Center section. WJBK- TV would eventually become an exclusive CBS affiliate by 1. Windsor, Ontario- based CKLW- TV (channel 9, now CBET- DT) became a Du. Scripps considered trading WXYZ back to ABC in order to bid for the Gillett stations as a group. However, this would have put Scripps above the FCC's ownership limit of the time even if Scripps sold off its smaller- market stations, so this was abandoned. So in 1. 99. 3, SCI was acquired by the film and television production company New World Communications. As a Fox station. Fox made the investment to comply with their winning bid for the broadcast rights to the NFL's National Football Conference. As a result of Fox's investment, New World agreed to switch the network affiliations of most of the company's stations, including WJBK, to Fox. Despite a three- month interruption in coverage due to CBS losing the NFC rights (the games instead aired on WKBD- TV, channel 5. Fox's NFC telecasts), with the switch, the Detroit Lions' regular season games would continue to air on WJBK. CBS found it difficult to find a new home in Detroit. After all of the higher- profile stations in the area turned down affiliation offers, CBS was forced to deal with the market's lower- rated UHF outlets, neither of which had nearly the signal penetration that WJBK had. As a contingency plan, CBS signed a long- term affiliation deal with WTOL- TV in Toledo, Ohio; which provides city- grade coverage to most of Detroit's southern suburbs and grade B coverage of Detroit itself. It also persuaded Mid- Michigan's longtime NBC affiliate, WNEM- TV, to switch to CBS; WNEM provided stronger coverage of Detroit's outer northern suburbs than did the market's longtime CBS affiliate, WEYI- TV. It also convinced WLNS- TV in Lansing to build a translator in Ann Arbor. The main WLNS signal provided at least grade B coverage to many of Detroit's western suburbs. With just days to go before WJBK was due to switch to Fox, CBS faced the prospect of having to import WTOL, WNEM, and WLNS on area cable providers until it could find a replacement affiliate. CBS would end up purchasing low- rated UHF independent station WGPR- TV (channel 6. WWJ- TV) in September 1. ![]() Eyewitness News New YorkFormer Fox affiliate WKBD briefly became an independent station before becoming a charter affiliate of UPN in January 1. In addition to playing the character in Cleveland, he also played Sir Graves on WTOP- TV in Washington, D. C.
